- The turtles: two columns of the Nativity facade stand on a turtle and a tortoise, one for the sea and one for the land.

What does a guide tell you about Gaudí?
Gaudí took over the project in 1883, a year after construction began, and worked on it until his death in 1926, when less than a quarter was built. He is buried in the crypt.
He died on 10 June 1926 after being hit by a tram. Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the basilica in 2010, and the central Tower of Jesus Christ was topped out in February 2026, making it the tallest church in the world.
